What exactly is 316 Stainless Steel?
The addition of alloys is often done to steel in order to enhance the desired properties. For instance, the marine-grade stainlesssteel, often referred to as Type 316, is resistant to certain kinds of corrosive environments.
There are many different types of stainless-steel 316. There are several common types, including L and F as well as N and H variants. Each differs slightly, and each serves the same purpose. L means 316L steel has low carbon levels, below the 316.
of 316, 316L and 316 Stainless Steel Common Quality
Though they're similar to Type 304 commonly found in the food industry, Type 316 and 316L both offer better resistance to corrosion and are more robust at high temperatures. They cannot also be hardened through heat treatment, and they can be easily bent and stretched.
A distinction between the 316 and 316L Stainless Steel
The stainless steel 316L has less carbon content than the 316. Although it has a lower carbon content, 316L is very similar with 316 in practically every way. Cost is the same, they are both tough and resistant against corrosion, making them ideal for difficult-to-reach situations.
For projects that require a significant amount the use of welding, then 316L is the better choice due to the fact that 316 is more susceptible to welding corrosion in comparison to an 316L (corrosion of the weld). However, the 316 can be annealed to withstand the attenuation of welding. 316L is also a very suitable stainless steel choice for high temperatures, high corrosion applications which is why it is extremely popular in marine and construction projects.
Neither 316 nor 316L is the most affordable option. The 304 is similar to the 304L but the price is less. The 304 is not as robust as the 317 and 317L, which have higher molybdenum contents and better total corrosion resistance.
