Installation Guide
Install VX License Server
Every VX license can be a floating license allowing it to be used on more than one workstation. However only one workstation can use the license at any given time. If you intend to use the single license as a floating license you will need to install the VX License Server program.
|
CAUTION: The VX license server program should ONLY be installed on your Network License Server computer. Do NOT install it on a client or stand alone computer. If the VX license will only be accessed by the single computer on which it is installed, do NOT install the VX License Server program. VX will not run if it is installed incorrectly. |
Additionally, VX and a password should be installed on each client or stand alone workstation to be served by this computer. In order to use your license as a floating license, the VX License Server program needs to be installed and running on at least one computer on the network. This computer will be designated as your VX Network License Server.

If it is your intention to only use this license on one computer, pick Cancel now to skip the following steps. Your VX Installation is complete.
The default VX license server directory is displayed. You can accept it, enter a different directory or pick Browse to display the Directory Browser to locate and select the VX license server directory.
If you select a VX license server directory using the Directory Browser, the path "\VXCorp\VXServer" will be appended to the selected path and will be displayed in the window.
When you are satisfied with the VX license server directory, pick Next > to continue.
If the directory does not exist, pick Yes to create it.

If you want to install the VX
license server as a service (i.e., it will start at system startup) pick
Yes. Otherwise
pick No and it will install as an application (i.e., it will only
run while a user is logged into the system).
The VX Installation Status Form displays the progress of the
VX Server installation.
License Descriptions and Port Numbers
When you add a license to a client or a server, VX will ask you for a description for the license. The description can be any text that you wants to associate with the license or you can leave it blank.
When you install a password to or on a license server there is also a port number that can be assigned to the license. If you do not specify a port number then the license server behaves just as it has prior to v8.0. Only if you assign a port number to a password do you get the new multi-threaded functionality. See Install VX Passwords for more information.
Multiple Licenses using a Single Server
The v8.0 license server can serve up multiple licenses on different ports. For example, a user has a CAD license with 2 seats and then just a single CAM license. With the new v8.0 server you can install the CAD license to port 2200 for example and the CAM license to port 2201.
On the client side you can then add the "-lport xxx" command line argument to control which port the VX software talks to. In this example if you wanted to connect to the CAD license you would run VX with "vx -lport 2200" and to get the CAM license you would use "vx -lport 2201". This in effect separates the 2 licenses but still uses only a single server.
Prior to v8.0 you had to use 2 different license server machines to do the same thing. Now it can be done on a single machine. The new v8.0 server is backwards compatible with v6.5 and up, including the new multi-threaded (multi-port) capability.
The VX license server has several command line options to manage passwords, etc. You can get these options by running vxserver.exe -h or vxserversvc.exe -h (the svc executable runs as a Windows service, the other runs as a regular application). See Running VX from Command Line for more information.
