Face Splitting/Trimming

Invoked ByEdit go to Face

Use these commands to split and trim faces or shapes with other curves, faces, shapes or datum planes. The trimming objects can be self-intersection. Any portion of the face or shape that intersects with the trimming objects will be split or trimmed. Refer to the commands below.

Trim Faces to Faces Trim Faces to Faces

Trim Faces to FacesUse this command to trim away part of a face or shape where it intersects with other faces, shapes, and/or datum planes. These trimming objects can be self-intersecting. This command can also trim a solid but will result in a an open shape.

Split Faces with Faces Split Faces with Faces

Use this command to split a face or shape where it intersects with another face, shape, or datum planes. The result can be two distinct faces or shapes (refer to the Explode option below). Like the Divide Shape command, this command can also split a solid. This command is similar to the Divide Shapes command but connectivity between the two faces or shapes is maintained.

Trim Faces to Curves Trim Faces to Curves

Trim Faces to CurvesUse this command to trim a face or shape to a curve or set of curves. The curves can intersect each other but spurs will be removed from the resulting trimmed face (i.e., the trimmed face will be cleaned up).

The required inputs include the faces or shapes to trim, the trimming curves and the sides of the faces to keep. Optional inputs include the method for projecting the curves, an option to automatically retain corresponding "checkerboard" faces and the ability to assign a unique name to the feature if desired.

Split Faces at Curves Split Faces at Curves

Split Faces at CurvesUse this command to split a face or shape at a curve or set of curves. If the curves intersect each other, the spurs are reflected in the resulting faces.

This command maintains connectivity. If you split one face, a shape will be the result. Splitting one shape will result in the same shape having additional faces.

Optional Inputs are documented here. Optional Inputs (Face Split/Trim Commands)

Flip side to keep

The arrows indicate the side to keep. Check this box to flip the arrows and keep the opposite side.

Trim with all simultaneously

Use this option to specify that the trim operations be performed consecutively (in order) or simultaneously. This option will have a different effect on some self-intersecting faces.

Extend faces to boundary

Check this box to automatically (and transparently) extend trimming faces to span the shape to be trimmed (when possible).

Projection

Controls the method used to project the trimming curves onto the subject faces. This option will always default back to In Place (none) when the command is completed.

Direction

Used with the Directed option above.  Pick the Define button and select a different projection direction.

Explode along new edges

All new edges will be unsewn from the shape.

Trim to checkerboard

When this box is checked, each region you select to keep will automatically select corresponding checkerboard regions. Otherwise only those regions selected will be retained after the trim.

Extend curves to boundary

Check this box to automatically extend trim curves to the limits of the set of faces to be trimmed where possible. The extensions are linear and start at the end of the trim curve.

If the projection method above is set to In Place, it will be reset to Face Normal if this box is checked. This will help avoid possible curve extension problems.
