Purpose

Make an axial helicoidal contouring using a rotative tool. Unlike a traditional contouring operation, carried out at a constant altitude, the cycle contains a simultaneous descending move all along the tool path, so that tool wear is reduced.

The positioning of the part and the machining is done  with the C axis (Spindle) and NOT with the Y axis even if the machine tool has one.

Understanding the function

The topological analysis engine searches for all sides adjacent to the selected side, so that a closed path is defined, when possible.  Detected sides are automatically and vertically extended to the stock model’s lowest and highest limits.  The system offers a point in the middle of the user selected side as the contouring operation’s starting point.  This starting point, the type of lead in and lead out moves and the various descending modes can be modified when the operation is defined.

The algorithm also controls corners for which the minimum radius is smaller than the tool radius.  In such a case, TopSolid'Cam generates rest material that will be automatically recognized by subsequent rework machining operations.

A contouring operation implies descending moves into or outside the material!  Several descending modes are available, relative to the tool the user chooses.  For a vertical descent into the material, in rapid or work feed rate, the user can define a descent point or use one offered by TopSolid'Cam.

The helicoidal contouring mode assumes that the tool path is closed.
