Purpose

Removes all material perpendicular to a side, between the finished part and the stock model, by respecting the side’s natural edges and its possible islands.

TopSolid'Cam advises a certain number of passes in Z, relative to the quantity of material to be removed and the cutting conditions of the tool called.

Understanding the function

The pocketing cycle deals with faces having simple and complex contours. The presence of islands or corners with a radius smaller than the tool’s radius does not alter the computation. On the contrary, TopSolid'Cam in this case will generate leftover material that will be detected in later machining operations.

When setting the parameters in the dialog, the machined area can be displayed with an interactive X hatched area.

A pocketing operation will create descent within the material! All strategies are available, depending on the user’s preference. In the case of a vertical descent in a pocket, at a rapid or work feed, the user can select the descent point or accept the default point suggested by TopSolid'Cam.

How to use

Topologic mode

  1. Select a face from the part to machine

  2. Confirm the ’Pocketing’ operation

  3. Select the tool to use for the operation

This option is available when the topologic analysis engine detects a flat, horizontal side with all edges corresponding to vertical and ascending sides.  This operation is carried out, relative to the current positioning.

Islands found in the middle of this side are also automatically detected.

Warning:

Please note : The user may wish to machine a pocket with no horizontal side (a bottomless pocket).  In such a case, the user must click on one of the ascending, vertical sides and choose the rest machining option, instead of the offered contouring operation.

Automatic mode

  1. Select the curve to pocket

  2. Select the face from the part on which the machining operation will be based, or input the altitude of the operation

  3. Select the tool to use for the operation

he user can eventually click on the ‘Info’ button in order to know the geometrical characteristics of the face to machine (Area, minimum radius, total height, etc..).
