Purpose

Generates a grooving operation through a series of lead in and out moves, when using descending moves into the material.  The user can define parameters for the descending mode.

TopSolid'Cam advises a certain number of passes in Z, relative to the quantity of material to be removed and the cutting conditions of the tool called.

Please Note: This function allows the user to create grooves that are not created using exact dimensions, where one tool passage (widthwise) is enough.  In this case, the groove’s width determines the diameter of the tool to be used.  However, this function can also be used for rough creation of grooves with exact dimensions, provided it is included in a complete machining process

Understanding the function

The grooving cycle controls simple and complex contour sides.  Corners with a radius smaller than the tool radius do not prevent tool path calculation.  On the contrary, TopSolid'Cam then generates rest material that will be automatically recognized by rework machining operations.

When machining parameters are entered in the dialogue boxes, the actual machinable area is visualized through an interactive hatching.

A grooving operation implies descending moves into the material!  Several machining modes are available, relative to the tool the user chooses.

How to use

Topologic mode

  1. Specify the model’s side to be machined.

  2. Validate the “Grooving” selection.

  3. Choose the necessary tool for the operation.  Only tools with a diameter smaller or equal to the assumed groove’s width are offered

The user can later click on the “Info” button to obtain information on the geometrical characteristics of the side to be created (surface area, minimum radius, total height, etc.).

This option is available when the topologic analysis engine detects a flat, horizontal side with all edges corresponding to vertical and ascending sides, parallel, two by two and with a length/width ratio greater or equal to a predefined parameter value.  This operation is carried out, relative to the current positioning.

Important:

Please Note: The user may wish to create a groove with no horizontal side (a bottomless groove).  In such a case, the user must click on one of the ascending, vertical sides and choose the grooving option.

Automatic mode

In such cases, a profile representing the center of the groove must be predefined.

  1. Specify the contour on which a grooving operation is to be performed.

  2. Confirm or reverse the machining direction for the first pass..

  3. Specify the side of the model to be created and on which the grooving operation will be set or specify the altitude value with which the operation will be executed.

  4. In the dialogue box below, enter the width of the groove to be created.  The user can later specify 2 parallel sides for a groove to be created, if it is already present on the part.  To do this, press the “Select Sides” button

  1. Choose the necessary tool for the operation.

The user can later click on the “Info” button to obtain information on the geometrical characteristics of the side to be created (surface area, minimum radius, total height, etc.).
