Purpose

Removes all material along a side, between the finished part and the stock model and extending it to the stock model’s vertical limits.  Unlike a traditional contouring operation, carried out at a constant altitude, the cycle contains a simultaneous descending move all along the tool path, so that tool wear is reduced.

TopSolid'Cam advises a certain number of passes in Z, relative to the quantity of material to be removed and the cutting conditions of the tool called

Understanding the function

The topologic analysis engine searches for all sides adjacent to the selected side, so that a closed path is defined, when possible.  Detected sides are automatically and vertically extended to the stock model’s lowest and highest limits.  The system offers a point in the middle of the user selected side as the contouring operation’s starting point.  This starting point, the type of lead in and lead out moves and the various descending modes can be modified when the operation is defined.

The algorithm also controls corners for which the minimum radius is smaller than the tool radius.  In such a case, TopSolid'Cam generates rest material that will be automatically recognized by subsequent rework machining operations.

A contouring operation implies descending moves into or outside the material!  Several descending modes are available, relative to the tool the user chooses.  For a vertical descent into the material, in rapid or work feed rate, the user can define a descent point or use one offered by TopSolid'Cam.

The helicoidal contouring mode assumes that the tool path is closed.

How to use

Topologic mode

  1. Specify the model’s side to be machined.

  2. Validate the “Helicoidal Contouring” selection.

  3. Choose the necessary tool for the operation

This option is available when the topologic analysis engine detects one or more sets of sides, vertical or sloped, or when the user selects the automatic “ Helicoidal Contouring” function

Automatic mode

  1. Specify the profile on which a contouring operation is to be performed.

  2. Specify the side of the model to be created and on which the helicoidal contouring operation will be set or specify the altitude value with which the operation will be executed.

  3. Choose the necessary tool for the operation

The user can later click on the “Info” button to obtain information on the geometrical characteristics of the side to be created (surface area, minimum radius, total height, etc.).
