Molybdenum Silicide (MoSi2) is a refractory metal silicide, mainly used as a heating element. In recent years, it has been considered as a potential structural ceramic because it exhibits high elastic modulus and excellent oxidation resistance at very high temperatures.

Other methods, such as mechanical alloying, reaction sintering and self-propagating high-temperature synthesis, are being investigated, but the commercial viability and repeatability of these methods have yet to be proved.
Preparation method of Molybdenum silicide
Molybdenum silicide and Molybdenum dioxide-based materials are usually prepared by the sintering method. Plasma spraying can be used to produce its dense monolithic and composite shapes; Materials produced by this method may contain a certain proportion of β-MoSi2 due to their rapid cooling.
Molybsilicide heating elements can be used in electric furnaces used in laboratory and production environments at temperatures up to 1800°C, such as heat treatment of glass, steel, electronics, ceramics and materials. Although these elements are brittle, they can operate at high power without aging, and their resistivity does not increase with the length of operation. Due to the breakdown of the passivation layer, their maximum operating temperature must be lowered in an atmosphere with low oxygen content.
Other ceramic materials used for heating elements are silicon carbide, barium titanate and lead titanate composites.
Molybdenum silicide is used as a contact material in microelectronics. It is often used as a shunt on polysilicon lines to increase its electrical conductivity and signal speed.
Molybdenum silicide applications
Molybdenum silicide can be applied in the fields of high-temperature oxidation-resistant coating materials, electric heating elements, integrated electrode film, structural materials, composite material enhancer, wear-resistant materials, structural ceramics bonding materials and so on. It is distributed in the following industries:
1) Energy chemical industry
Electric heating elements, high-temperature heat exchangers, gas burners, high-temperature thermocouples and their protective tubes, a crucible for smelting sodium, lithium, lead, bismuth, tin and other metals.
2) Microelectronics industry
MoSi2 and other refractory metal silicides, such as Ti5Si3, WSi2 and Tasi2, are important candidate materials for gate and interconnect thin films of large-scale integrated circuits.
3) Aerospace industry
Molybdenum silicide has been widely studied and applied as high-temperature oxidation-resistant coating material. Especially used as turbine engine components, such as blades, impellers, burners, tail nozzles and sealing devices.
4) The automobile industry
Molybsilicide is used in turbocharger rotors, valve bodies, spark plugs and engine parts for automobile turbo engines.
