Run SURFCAM Over computers in a network

Introduction

For companies with a trained professional to administrate their computer network, Surfware offers the SURFCAM Network Manager, also called License Manager Service (LMS) or License Manager (LM), or Network Licensing. With just one shipment of SURFCAM, the LMS enables you to run SURFCAM on several computers in your network, at a considerable discount. Because Surfware ships only one box of SURFCAM, with only one Software Interface Module (SIM), Surfware can pass that savings to you.

2   Remove the SIM from your computer

If you have a SIM plugged into your parallel port or a USB port, please remove it.

3   Install the License Manager Service (LMS)

Insert the SURFCAM CD, and the SURFAM installation dialog box appears. Click to install the SURFCAM Network Manager.

This installs,

   License Manager Service

USB and the Parallel Port SIM drivers

License Manager Service utilities: Add or Remove LMS, Create DOS Prompt, Server Status, Start Server, Stop Server, and WLMAdmin

   License file installer

4   Reboot the computer

This installation prompts you to reboot. This is necessary to complete the installation of the LMS.

5   Plug-in your SIM (USB or parallel port SIM)

If the following dialog box appears, follow the recommended options to complete this installation before you go to the next step.

6   Run the Server Status utility to be sure the service is running

From the Windows Start menu click Programs > SURFCAM Network Server > Server Status. If the window that appears tells you the service is running, go to the next step.

7   Make sure that the license manager service is set to Automatic

From the Windows Start menu click Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services (In Windows XP, Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > Administrative Tools > Services). The following window appears.

If “SentinelLM” is not set to Automatic, double-click the line, as indicated above, and edit the dialog box to change it to Automatic.

8   Run the Stop Service utility

From the Windows Start menu click Programs > SURFCAM Network Server > Stop Server.

9   Open the License File

Whenever you purchase SURFCAM software, including maintenance and upgrades, Surfware E-mails you a license file. The file name includes the user name and dates, and is typically very long, and has a .SCLIC extension.

   1.   Open the .SCLIC license file.

   2.   Clear the standalone license check box if it appears.

   3.   Click the Install License File Now button.

The following message appears:

“Before installing a license file, please stop the license server. Restart your license server after the license file has been installed. Choose NO to skip installation of the license file into the license server directory; otherwise, choose YES. Do you wish to continue installing this license file into the license server.”

Click YES if you ran the Stop Service utility, as described in the previous step.

The license is now installed.

10   Run the Start Service utility

From the Windows Start menu click Programs > SURFCAM Network Server > Start Server.

11   Install SURFCAM on each computer in the network

Install SURFCAM by inserting the SURFCAM CD into each computer in the network. During each SURFCAM installation, choose the "SURFCAM Network" option. Your license determines the number of computers on the network that may run SURFAM at the same time.

Users sometimes choose to install SURFCAM onto more computers than allowed by the license, if those computers are not used at the same time. For example, imagine you have 100 computers on your network, and 50 computers are used in the morning, and the other 50 computers are used by a different group in the afternoon. In this case, you need a license for only 50 users, because only 50 of the computers are running SURFCAM at any given time.

If you wish to increase the number of users, you can order a new license file (.SCLIC) with a greater number of users. To install the new license file, start with Run the Stop Service utility (8), and continue from there.

11.1   Create a custom desktop icon to help SURFCAM load faster

When you double-click a SURFCAM Network desktop icon, the following dialog box appears, and you must wait while the License Manager checks each computer in the network against each individual license.

This takes longer with a greater number of licenses.

To save time, create a custom Desktop icon to automatically find an individual license, as follows.

   1.   Double-click a SURFCAM Network desktop icon. The license manager appears.

   2.   Choose the individual license (system number) that you will assign to the custom icon and click OK. For this example, the number is 25065.

   3.   Inside the license manager, click Create Shortcut. This creates an additional SURFCAM desktop icon that will launch SURFCAM with the assigned system number. If you are curious, right-click on the newly create desktop icon and click Properties. Notice the Target identifies the system number, 25065 in this case.

   4.   Double-click on the newly created SURFCAM network icon to immediately launch SURFCAM.

   5.   Repeat these steps for each computer on the SURFCAM network. At the next computer, choose the next System Number, 25066 in this case, and so on.

12   Trouble shooting

Problems with SURCAM network licensing are usually related to any of the following three categories. (1) LMS problems. (2) License file problems. (3) SIM problems.

12.1   LMS problems

   1.   An earlier version of the LMS was not uninstalled.

To correct the problem, you simply uninstall the earlier version. Then go back to Remove the SIM from your computer (2), and continue from there to install the new LMS.

   2.   The Service is not running.

From the Windows Start menu click Programs > SURFCAM Network Server > Server Status. If the window that appears tells you the service is running, skip ahead to License file problems.

If the service is not running, . . .

. . . try to start the service. From the Windows Start menu click Programs > SURFCAM Network Server > Start Server. If this does not work, or is not available, you may need to re-install the service. Go back to Remove the SIM from your computer (2), and continue from there.

When you try to start the service, if you get the error message “Couldn't start SentinelLM: The system cannot find the path specified,” this means the registry path is not the same as the LMS install path. Repair this in one of two ways. (1) Go back to Remove the SIM from your computer (2), and continue from there to reinstall the service. (2) Run Regedit to correct the path, as follows.

A.   From the Windows Start menu, click Run. Enter the command “regedit” and click OK.

B.   Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE> SYSTEM> CURRENT CONTROL SET> SERVICES> SENTINEL LM. Change the Image path to reflect the correct installation path.

C.   Go back to The Service is not running. to again check the server status. Then continue from there.

   3.   The SURFCAM desktop icon properties were incorrectly edited.

An icon created as described under Create a custom desktop icon to help SURFCAM load faster (11.1) could have been edited to point to a system number that was available, but is currently being used.

   4.   Someone on the network is using your individual license. This will likely cause the error message 50314.

Even if you corrected your desktop icon, another user could still use your system number. In this case, you can use any other available system number.

   5.   The name of the server computer changes. In this case, message 50313 appears. However, after you click OK, the License Manager appears, and you can still select a license to run SURFCAM.

To correct this inconvenience, right-click on the desktop icon and change the target to match the name of the server computer (the computer where the SURFCAM Network Manager is installed).

12.2   License file problems

   1.   When you attempt to start a network version of SURFCAM, you get the error message, Msg50319: You cannot check out old license.

Stop and start the LM service, if the problem persists, the license file has expired. Contact your local SURFCAM dealer.

   2.   When you attempt to start a network version of SURFCAM, you get the error message, License is checked out at another machine.

The license is being used or has not yet checked itself back in. Choose a different license or wait until one is available.

   3.   When you attempt to start a network version of SURFCAM, you get the error message, 939519987 and Server: <Server Name> and Feature <License #>.

One or more license files have time expired. Contact you local dealer.

   4.   You are using a non-network license file.

Be sure you are using a network license file. Open the .SCLIC file and scroll down. Be sure it says Network SURFCAM, not Regular SURFCAM.

If you lost the .SCLIC file, you may open the LSERVRS file in any text editor, such as Notepad. The LSERVRS has the same content as the .SCLIC file, and represents the installed .SCLIC file. Search for the LSERVRC file under the installed SURFCAM folder.

   5.   The license file (.SCLIC) accidentally gets renamed.

When license files are saved from invasive mail programs such as AOL, they may have an extension of TXT. Simply rename the license file extension to SCLIC. Then return to Run the Stop Service utility (5), and continue from there.

   6.   SURFCAM starts in Demo mode.

A.   Verify that you have not accidentally chosen the default (Deo) license file in the SURFCAM License Manager when selecting a license file. If you simply choose OK from the LMS screen, it will default to demo mode. In the following illustration Demo is not selected.

B.      Verify that you have the latest LMS installed. From the Windows Start menu click Programs > SURFCAM Network Server > Server Status. For SURFCAM 2003 the latest version was 7.1.1, as shown in the following illustration. Check with your dealer if you have a version earlier than 7.1.1.

C.      Right-click on the icon and click Properties. Verify that the text -network follows the target path in the SURFCAM icon properties.

D.   Verify that the SIM device is installed and running properly on the server machine.

E.      Verify that the Sentinel System Drivers are installed on the client machine.

F.   Verify that the LSERVRC license file has no extension and is located in the same directory as the LSERVNT.EXE.

12.3   SIM problems

The problems listed here generate the following message. For this example, the Server is “CLAIRE” and the system number is 25065.

   1.   The SIM in not plugged in.

Visually verify that the appropriate SIM is fully inserted into the correct port.

   2.   You attempt to use a non-network SIM on the server computer.

Remove the non-network SIM and replace it with a network SIM. Contact your local SURFCAM dealer if you are not sure whether or not you have a network SIM.

   3.   The SIM is locked.

Remove the SIM and reboot. Re-insert the SIM and start a network version of SURFCAM.

   4.   The correct SIM drivers are not installed. Locate the support downloads at the Rainbow website (http://www.rainbow.com) to get the latest drivers.

   5.   The SIM drivers on the server computer might be corrupted. Repair the corrupted SIM drivers. On the server computer,

A.   From the Windows Control Panel uninstall “Sentinel System Drivers.”

B.   From the Windows Start menu click Programs > SURFCAM Network Server > Add/Remove, then click the Remove button to remove the SentinelLM license manager from the Windows registry.

C.   From the Windows Control Panel uninstall “SURFCAM Network SIM.”

D.   Re-install the SURFCAM Network Manager, starting with Remove the SIM from your computer (2).

If the problem persists, the SIM may be faulty and should be replaced. Contact your local SURFCAM dealer.
