The toolpath can be viewed as following a path created by the intersection of the surfaces to be machined and a group of planes perpendicular to the XY plane; hence the name planar.
The distinguishing feature of Planar tool moves, when observed in top view, is that they are linear and parallel. In a side view you can see that these moves follow the curve of the surfaces being cut.
