You can import DXF and DWG files to the SolidWorks software by creating a new SolidWorks drawing or importing the file as a sketch in a new part. You can also import a file in native format, and you can edit a file in the DWGeditor.
To import a DXF or DWG file:
In SolidWorks, click Open
(Standard toolbar) or File,
Open.
In the Open dialog box, set Save as type to Dxf (*.dxf) or Dwg (*.dwg), browse to a file, and click Open.
In the DXF/DWG Import Wizard, select an import method as described below, then click Next to access Drawing Layer Mapping and Document Settings. Click Finish on any of the three screens to import the file.
Edit/view in DWGeditor. Opens the file in the DWGeditor, where you can view and edit the file, then save the file in native format.
Create new SolidWorks drawing. Select one of the following:
Convert to SolidWorks entities. Imports the file to a drawing with the DWG or DXF entities converted to SolidWorks entities.
Embed as a sheet in native DXF/DWG format. Imports the entire DWG sheets in native format (view only) to SolidWorks drawing sheets, which you can view and print. To maintain a link to the source file, select Link to original file.
Import to a new part. Imports a drawing as a sketch in the new part. You can convert the sketch to a 3D part.
Import MDT data from file (imports as parts, assemblies and/or drawings). Imports Mechanical Desktop files as both models and layouts. If you click Next, you skip Drawing Layer Mapping and go directly to Document Settings.
