Motion Tab

The motion tab lets you add motion to any joint with at least one open degree of freedom.

If you are viewing the Motion tab in the IntelliMotion Builder, you can add motion by selecting a joint to display options on the right side of the page. Learn more about joint motion.

Motion On

Select the joint open degree of freedom to which the motion generator is applied.

Motion Type

Select the type of motion applied to the selected open degree of freedom.

  • Free - There is no motion generator attached to this degree of freedom.

  • Displacement - There is a motion generator controlling the displacement of this degree of freedom.

  • Velocity - There is a motion generator controlling the velocity of this degree of freedom.

  • Acceleration - There is a motion generator controlling the acceleration of this degree of freedom.

Initial Displacement

If the Motion Type is Velocity or Acceleration, displays the displacement applied to the degree of freedom at the start of the simulation.

Initial Velocity

If the Motion Type is Acceleration, displays the velocity applied to the degree of freedom at the start of the simulation.

Function

Select the function that drives the motion generator assigned to this degree of freedom.

  • Constant

  • Step

  • Harmonic

  • Spline

  • Expression - Only available if Function, above, is selected and if a model created by COSMOSMotion with a function driven by an expression is opened in COSMOSMotion. The simulation can be run using the expression, but the expression cannot be changed nor can a new expression be added.

    Specify the following:

    • Expression - Edits the force or moment expression. If you make a change to an expression, the A button verifies and accepts the change and the X button cancels the change.

    • Function - Inserts a function into the motion expression using dialog templates with fields for function arguments at the current insertion point. The new function replaces any selected text. If you select an existing function and the template dialog box recognizes it, it initializes the template fields with the function's arguments for editing.

    • Marker - Inserts a Marker ID into the motion expression at the current insertion point, replacing any selected text. Certain MSC.ADAMS functions require a Marker ID as an argument.

    • Cancel - Cancels all changes to the expression since the last Check.

    • Check - Verifies changes to the expression. If an error exists, a message indicates the offending position.

    • Plot Functions - Displays a plot of the current function (for constant, step, harmonic, and spline functions only).

Expression

Enter the expression for the expression function selected above.

You cannot use result-dependant functions for motion definitions. ADAMS/Solver only supports mathematical functions.
