Grain Operators

The Grain operators allow you to add and remove grain from input images. You can simulate both film-style grain and video-style grain. You can also add and create noise. Grain operators are especially useful for 3D images because they often lack the minor imperfections that show up in the grain.

The Grain operators are available from the Ops > Grain menu in the FxTree, or directly from the Grain tab of the Operator Selector.

The Grain category contains the following operators:

Degrain

The Degrain operator removes or extracts grain from film-based clips.

• If the grain is removed, edges can be protected from the filter.

• If the grain is extracted, it can be composited back in after processing using the Grain Composite operator.

This operator requires one RGB or RGBA input clip.

Grain Composite

The Grain Composite operator composites grain or noise into an image. Prior to any intermediate processing, the grain or noise will usually have been extracted from the original image using a Degrain (film) or Video Noise Removal (video) operator. This prevents the grain or noise from becoming distorted during processing.

This operator requires an RGBA input and an RGB Grain input.

New Grain

The New Grain Operator lets you control the grain size of images at a subpixel level.

This operator requires one RGB or RGBA input clip.

Noise

The Noise operator adds noise to the image. Random values are added to or multiplied by the intensity of each component of each pixel.

This operator requires one RGB or RGBA input clip.

Video Noise Removal

The Video Noise Removal operator removes or extracts noise from video-based clips. If the noise is extracted, edges can be prevented from being extracted as noise. The noise can be composited back in after processing using the Grain Composite operator.

This operator requires one RGB or RGBA input clip.
