While all the default layouts have viewports that are embedded, it is also possible to have floating viewports. When viewports are floating (or detached) they can be Window or Palette style. There are two differences between Windows and Palettes. The most significant difference is that all Palettes can have their visibility toggled with the "~" key. The other difference is that Palettes have a thinner header and only controls for closing the Palette whereas Windows allow minimizing as well as closing.
