Edit > Select Visible Only (or Ctrl-V) causes the Selection Tools to affect polygons and CAD faces whose front sides are visible in the Viewing Area. See Select Through.
If Edit > Backfaces Mode is also in effect, Select Visible Only causes selection tools to affect front and back sides that are visible in the Viewing Area.
