the default) - causes the shape of a selection in the Viewing Area to
be a rectangle.

shape of a selection in the Viewing Area to be an ellipse.
Edit > Selection Tools > Line (or Ctrl-L) - causes
the shape of a selection in the Viewing Area to be a line. This is not
available on ordered point objects.
Edit > Selection Tools > Paintbrush (or Ctrl-P)
- causes the selection tool to behave like a paintbrush while the left
mouse button is remains pressed.
Edit > Selection Tools > Lasso - causes the selection
tool to behave like a lasso -- it selects everything inside the irregular
area.
Edit > Selection Tools > Crease Angle Mode -
is a toggle switch. In Crease Angle Mode, the selection tool (regardless
of the selection behavior such as Rectangle, Ellipse, Line, Paintbrush,
or Lasso) extends the selection to include all contiguous polygons whose
shared edges meet at an angle that is less than or equal to X. X is specified
by the administrator at Tools > Options
> Display > Selection >
Crease Angle.
