Polygons > Reduce Noise compensates for scanner error by moving points to statistically correct locations. Noise can cause sharp edges to become dull or smooth curves to become rough. A color-coded representation of the movement is available.
The controls are:
Optimize group - customizes the operation based on the type of the noisy object.
Free-form shapes radio button - If the object represents a free-form or organic shape, this reduces the noise with respect to surface curvature.
Prismatic Shapes (conservative) radio button - helps maintain sharpness of features such as edges on a mechanical or angular shape.
Prismatic Shapes (aggressive) radio button - helps maintain sharpness of features such as edges on a mechanical or angular shape.
Smoothness Level slider (three levels from Min to Max) - specifies the degree of noise reduction; the aggressiveness of point detection. Generally, use the lowest setting that gives acceptable results.
Analysis group - controls the graphical representation of noise reduction.
Display Deviations checkbox - whether to display a color-coded representation of the degree of noise reduction. Colors represent the distances that the surface moved after noise reduction.
Edit Spectrum checkbox - whether to display additional controls for the modification of the color-coded noise spectrum. See All About Spectrums.
Statistics group - indicates the distances that points were moved during noise reduction.
Maximum Distance - the greatest distance that any point was moved.
Average Distance - the average distance that all points were moved.
Standard Deviation - describes the variability of the distances.
To reduce the noise on a polygon object:
Select the desired triangles. If no selection is made, the entire model is refined.
Click Polygons > Reduce Noise.
Adjust the controls and click Apply.
Study the color-coded deviation map. If not satisfied, adjust the Smoothness Level and click Apply again.
Click OK to save the reduced-noise polygon object to the Model Manager, or click Cancel to exit without saving.
Edit Spectrum - allows modification of the color-coded noise spectrum. See All About Spectrums.
