Where to Start in Sub-spindle Turning?

In EdgeCAM Design mode set up your sub-spindle machine environment with main and sub-spindle devices drawn and positioned as shown in the diagram below. Save this as a seed file and use it as your starting point for each job. The benefit of drawing the spindle geometry is that it enables EdgeCAM and Simulator to display the spindles' positional status during the machining sequence which is useful in detecting collisions.

The seed file should be drawn in the ZX Turn Environment.  See Selecting the Environment.

The chuck/collet geometry can be defined by a simple 2D line drawing of the chuck/collet profile. From this, a turn billet fixture can be created. See Creating Stock or Fixtures.

In Solid Machinist, you can insert the solid model of the chuck/collet and select this as a fixture.. EdgeCAM Part Modeler is an excellent solid modeling tool for defining spindle devices. An example parametric chuck is shipped with EdgeCAM and can be found in the cam\examples\new in version 8.0\advanced turning folder of your EdgeCAM installation.

You are likely to require a couple of seed files for each machine to represent the different spindle setups.

The chuck/collet diameter for each part is likely to change. When opening the seed file you can modify the spindle geometry to suit the stock diameter you are using.
