Only partial text-type matches are needed. For example if you filter the description on 'CP', then 'CP20', 'CP30' and 'CP50' might be listed. The matching is not case-sensitive.
A material must have a hardness range that falls wholly within your specified Hardness range to match.
The Show in List option filters on inserts' or materials' Visible in list property (in the General tab of the Material or Insert dialog).
