Use the Snap Mode toolbar to simplify the picking of geometry on the screen. The choices include: grid, point, line end point, line midpoint, line segments, line intersections, circle center, circle quadrants, object, tangent to object. If you want to create smooth curves, the tangent to object snapping mode should be set.
