Extract XY Grid from Scanlines

You can extract a grid structure by resampling a scanline model with a specified sampling stepover. This option is useful when you have a scanline structure with a constant stepover in one axis and you want to create a grid using the same stepover in the other axis.

You can use the Distance Point to Point/Origin button to measure the distance between two points on adjacent scanlines to find out the stepover value in the first axis.

To see an example where a grid has been extracted from a scanline model with a constant stepover in Y, using the same stepover in X, click here.

To extract an XY Grid from Scanlines:

  1. Make sure that you have a scanline model displayed which has a regular stepover in one axis.

  2. Make sure that the points are drawn on the model by clicking on the Draw Points button , at the bottom of the Graphics window.

  3. Click on the Point Editing button on the Main toolbar to display its side toolbar.

  4. Zoom in on the end of two scanlines, then select two points on the model in neighbouring scanlines.

  5. Click on the Distance Point to Point/Origin button to display the Information window which shows the distance in X or Y between the two points.

  6. Make a note of the stepover between the two scanlines.

  7. Click on the Reorder Model button , to display Reorder Model dialog box.

  8. Select the Extract XY Grid from Scanlines option from the Operation list box.

  9. Type the stepover for the grid in the Scanline sampling stepover box.

Note: If you want an even grid, make this the same as the scanline stepover.

  1. Click on the Apply button to start the reordering process.

  2. When CopyCAD has reordered the points and created a new model with the prefix reorder_, click on the Accept button to close the Reorder Model dialog box.
