Extract XY Grid from Points

You can reorder points and save them as a grid structure if there is a constant spacing of the points in both the X axis and the Y axis.

You can see if there is a constant spacing, by drawing the points on the model and then viewing it from the top (Z). If there is not a constant spacing, CopyCAD will try to extract a grid but will fail.

Click on the Draw Points button , then click on the View from Top (Z) button .

A common use of this option is to extract a grid from an STL file containing a fine mesh triangulation. If you intend to surface the model, you can create a more efficient method of triangulation by extracting a grid from the points and then re-triangulating the model.

Follow the steps below to extract an XY Grid from Points:

  1. Click on the Reorder Model button , to display the Reorder Model dialog box.

  2. Select the Extract XY Grid from Points option from the Operation list box.

  3. Click on the Apply button to start the reordering process.

  4. When CopyCAD has reordered the points and created a new model with the prefix reorder_, click on the Accept button to close the Reorder Model dialog box.
