Tiling Terrains

Tiling Terrains allows you to generate a terrain, then tile "copies" of the terrain around the working window to create a larger terrain with no visible seams. You can tile terrains to the North, South, East, and West.

To tile terrains:

  1. Build a new terrain following the instructions for the "Random Generators."
  2. Once back in the working window, press Cmd/Ctrl+D to duplicate the terrain.
  3. With the duplicate terrain selected, press Shift+Up Arrow eight (8) times to move the terrain up to the North. You can also go into the Object Attributes dialog and enter the terrain size into the Z-Position field to move it up the same amount as the terrain size. If you've resized the terrain, you'll need to use the Object Attributes dialog to move the terrain up.

  4. With the terrain still selected, go back into the Terrain Editor and select Tile North. Before you do that, make sure that all the Random Generators are deselected.

  5. Exit the Terrain Editor.
  6. If you render the terrains, you'll notice a slight gap between the two terrains.

  7. Nudge the terrain back down a smidge by pressing Opt/Alt+Down Arrow key three or four times until the edges meet.

Caveat: The tiling options don't work quite right in Bryce so if the duplicate terrain looks the same as the original terrain (i.e., same rotation, etc.), then you can manually "tile" the terrain by doing the following:
  1. Duplicate the second terrain and move it right, or to the East, by pressing Shift+Right Arrow eight (8) times, then selecting Tile East from the Terrain Editor (deselect Tile North). If that doesn't work, flip the terrain on the X-axis, then nudge it into place next to the second terrain.
  2. Repeat by duplicating the third terrain, moving it down, and Tiling South (or flipping on the Z-axis).
