Appendix D - Known Issues

This page lists the known issues with Bryce. Issue numbers are being added to the specific page where the function is described but this is not yet complete.

  1. Apply Gradient to Light: On the PC, gradients can only be loaded that were saved from Photoshop 5.5 or earlier. On Macs, .grd files cannot be loaded at all. Affected versions: Bryce 5, 5.5, 6, and 6.1.
  2. Display or Hide Palettes: Since the palettes are no longer hidden in Bryce so that mousing over them makes them visible, some of the display/hide functions no longer work. See below for the listing of which functions are affected:
    1. Ctrl+4 - Control palette. Affected versions: Bryce 4, 5, 5.5, 6, and 6.1.
    2. Ctrl+6 - Advanced Display palette. Affected versions: Bryce 4, 5, 5.5, 6, and 6.1.
    3. Ctrl+Tab - Display or Hide all palettes. Affected versions: PC Bryce 5, 5.5, 6, and 6.1.
  3. Hide Interface: Ctrl+Tab to hide/display all palettes. Does not work on the PC. Affected versions: PC Bryce 4, 5, 5.5, 6, and 6.1.
  4. Export Object:
  1. Spray Rendering from Render Mode: While in Render Mode, returning to Wireframe mode after using the Spray Render tool will currently lose your spray rendered area. Affected versions: Bryce 5.5, 6, and 6.1.
  2. Sun/Moon Rings: The Secondary Ring option will not stay deselected. If you disable the secondary ring option, exit the Sky Lab, then re-enter the Sky Lab, the Secondary Ring option will be enabled again. The only way to get rid of the secondary ring is to disable the Halo Rings option. Affected versions: Bryce 5, 5.5, 6, and 6.1.
  3. Import Objects: D|S integration imports and .OBJ imports don't load bump maps correctly and the values will need to be manually tweaked. Affected versions: Mac/PC Bryce 6/6.1
  4. Sky Memory Dots: Sky save "dots" not saving IBL information. Affected versions: Mac/PC Bryce 6. Fixed in 6.1 however, see item 9 below for caveats.
  5. Image Based Lighting:
      1. If you save an HDRI to a Memory Dot, then save the scene file, the Memory Dot will be cleared although the HDRI will still be applied in the scene.
      2. If you save an HDRI to a Memory Dot, then change the sky setting, the Memory Dot will be cleared and the HDRI info will not be saved with the scene.
      3. If you save an HDRI to a Memory Dot, then select the top Memory Dot to switch to the default sky, and save the scene, when you reopen the file, Bryce will crash.

        Affected versions: Mac/PC Bryce 6.1.
  1. Camera can be incorporated into a converted mesh group. Affected version: Mac/PC Bryce 6. Fixed in Bryce 6.1.
  2. Photoshop plug-in support not working correctly. Some older filters may still work, such as the KPT3 filters provided with Bryce 3/4. Affected versions: Mac/PC Bryce 5, 5.5, 6, and 6.1.
  3. Loading image in Pictures Editor with alpha channel to replace another image does not replace the alpha channel. Workaround is to either load the alpha map separately or load into a blank slot. Affected versions: Mac/PC Bryce 4, 5, 5.5, 6, and 6.1.
  4. Leaf textures not saved in .bto (tree) files. Affected versions: Mac/PC Bryce 5, 5.5, 6, and 6.1.
  5. Intersection of two volumetric objects renders with artifacts. Affected versions: Mac/PC Bryce 4, 5, 5.5, 6, and 6.1.
  6. Reflection mapping does not work for cubes, pyramids, 2d faces, and 2d discs. For these primitives, only the base color is applied. Affected versions: Mac/PC Bryce 4, 5, 5.5, 6, and 6.1.
  7. Gradients applied to a terrain in the Terrain Editor cannot be saved to the Materials Library on PCs. The gradient colors in the Diffuse channel will be replaced by the original diffuse color. On Macs, the gradients can be saved to the Materials Library and applied to other terrains, except for the Blue and White striped gradient. This gradient can be saved to the library, but when you apply it to a terrain, Bryce crashes. The saved .MAT files from a Mac can be imported into the PC version, the gradient can be seen in the thumbnail, but when applied, the gradient is thrown out and the original diffuse color is applied. Affected versions: PC Bryce 4, 5, 5.5, 6, and 6.1. Mac Bryce 6 and 6.1.
  8. Some Bryce 4 OBP files will cause a Bryce 6 crash when selecting the object in the Objects Library. Workaround is to load the OBP in Bryce 5/5.5, and export out as a new OBP file, then import into Bryce 6.x. Affected versions: Mac/PC Bryce 6/6.1.
  9. Animations created in Bryce 4 may not work correctly if at all in Bryce 6. The workaround is to open the animation file in Bryce 6, select File > Animation Setup, set the Duration settings to 0 (make a note of the current Duration settings on paper first), click on the OK icon, select File > Animation Setup again, re-enter the Duration settings, and click on the OK icon. The animation should now play correctly in Bryce 6. Affected versions: Mac/PC Bryce 6/6.1.
  10. Running Bryce without the default presets will cause Bryce to crash since the locations are hard-coded into Bryce. Make sure you install all the preset executables that come with Bryce. Affected versions: All.
  11. When animating keyframes in the different labs, applying keyframes to all timelines does not apply the keyframes to the main timeline. There is not workaround at present. Affected versions: All.
  12. Currently, HDRI settings cannot be keyframed. Affected versions: Mac/PC Bryce 6/6.1.
  13. Because of the changes made to the library preview sizes, older presets do not have access to the longer titles and descriptions by default. To take advantage of the longer title and description fields, export the older preset from Bryce 6.1, and then re-import. Affected versions: Mac/PC Bryce 6.1.
  14. When importing an animation from DAZ|Studio then changing the location of the objects in Bryce, the position changes are not saved in Bryce since the animation information is saved in the matching .daz file. There is currently no workaround for this issue. Affected versions: Mac/PC Bryce 6/6.1.
  15. There are some screen refreshing issues that happen when other programs, dialogs, etc. are opened in front of the Bryce window. When Bryce is brought back to the front, a forced refresh is required to update the working window. Affected versions: Mac/PC Bryce 6.1.
  16. In the Tree Lab, increasing the minimum branches per segment to more than 4 may hang the Tree Lab up indefinitely or produce an out of memory error message. Affected versions: Mac/PC Bryce 6/6.1.
  17. If you delete Leo in the Pictures Editor, he'll come back and any textures you load in the first slot, will be replaced by Leo. Same with the moon texture since both these images are hard-coded into Bryce. Affected versions: All for Leo, Bryce 6/6.1 for the the moon only.
  18. Moon Brightness is currently too soft for many users. At the moment there is not workaround. Affected versions: All.
  19. Loading and immediately saving a scene file may cause the file size to double. There is currently no workaround except to make changes to the scene first before saving. Affected versions: Mac/PC Bryce 6/6.1.
  20. When you manually rotate an object on the Y-axis, Bryce will automatically change the X and Z-axis values to match the new rotation and reset the Y-rotation to 0. Affected versions: All.
  21. When previewing an animation from DAZ|Studio and in an OpenGL Display Mode, the OpenGL display cannot properly display the animation and the objects and figures will look like they are "exploding." Workaround is to preview an animation in Wireframe Mode. Affected versions: Mac/PC Bryce 6/6.1.
  22. When you import an object from DAZ|Studio or Poser, the object is grouped by material not by body part. If a particular body part needs to be deleted so as not to show in Bryce, set the affected body part to hidden/invisible in Poser/DS before exportting/importing. Affected versions: Mac/PC Bryce 6/6.1.
  23. When importing DAZ|Studio animations into Bryce, any hidden object/body part will reappear in Bryce. Hidden body parts for still objects do not import into Bryce. Affected versions: Mac/PC Bryce 6/6.1.
  24. The Tick Marker on the IBL Roller Ball disappears when you move the Roller Ball and will not reappear until you apply a new sky, then re-enter the Sky Lab. Affected versions: Mac/PC Bryce 6.1.
  25. If you try to cut some Bryce trees from your scene using Cmd/Ctrl+X, Bryce will crash. Affected versions: Mac/PC Bryce 6.1.
  26. When using Windows Vista and saving an animation as an AVI file, the AVI file can only be played in the Windows Media Player. Affected versions: PC Bryce 6/6.1 on Windows Vista only.
  27. When saving an HDRI sky to the Sky Library, the Y-setting will change to 90 no matter what setting was saved with the sky. Affected versions: Mac/PC Bryce 6.1.
    1. Before installing B6, it's recommended that Mac users run Disk Utilities (in the Applications > Utilities folder) and run Repair Permissions.
    2. Currently no Universal Binary support. B6 works under Mactel's Rosetta but with a slowdown in performance. Fixed in Bryce 6.1.
    3. Gradient Color picker currently doesn't work in Mac B6.
    4. Mac 16-bit TIF files imported into the Terrain Editor need to be saved or converted to PC Byte Order. Affected version: Bryce 6.
    5. The "Save" menu item works the same as the "Save As..." item. Affected version: Mac OS10.4 Bryce 6.
    6. CPU usage on single processors still uses about 80% while idling. On multi-processor Macs after a few minutes of inaction, B6 returns to near 0%. Affected versions: Bryce 4, 5, 5.5, and 6.
    7. B6 scene files saved with .br5 extension. Affected version: Mac 10.4 Bryce 6. Fixed in Bryce 6.1.
    8. Numeric Edit boxes only display 6 digits including the decimal. Affected versions: Bryce 5, 5.5, 6, and 6.1.
    9. Mac Bryce scene files must have the .BR6 extension (must be in all caps) in order for batch rendering to work correctly. If the files do not have the extension, Bryce 6 will render the default scene for the first queued scene file, then render the remaining scenes correctly. You must add the .BR6 extension in the folder where the files are saved, not when saving the scene file. Affected version: Bryce 6/6.1.
    10. Double-clicking on a Mac Bryce 6 scene file results in Bryce loading the default scene if the scene file does not have the .BR6 extension. Affected version: Bryce 6. Fixed in Bryce 6.1.
