Edit Material
The Edit Material command brings up the Materials Lab. This is the same editor that comes up when you press the
button next to the selected object.
The Materials Lab is where you create the materials to apply to your objects. By combining up to four texture components on the materials grid, you can create incredibly complex surfaces that can bring your scene to life.
There are two types of materials you can create: Surface materials, which define the surface properties of an object, and Volume materials, which define the properties of an object's volume as well as its surface. When you're creating volume materials, the settings in the Materials Lab change. Some of the surface material settings are replaced by volume effects settings.
To edit a material in the Materials Lab, select Objects > Edit Material from the menu or press Cmd/Ctrl+M.
You do not have to have an object selected in order to open the Materials Lab, however, if you want to edit a material already applied to an object, select the object first.
Refer to "The Materials Lab" for more on the Materials Lab and "Understanding Volume Material Channels" for more on Volume materials.
