Working with Multiple Documents / Dependent Documents
A dependent document is one that has imported information from another document. Dependent documents can exist in all applications:
Part - when you use File / Import / From Document or File / Import / Geometry to include geometry from another part document.
Drafting - when you create a view from a part document. See Updating Drafting Sheets for a list of characteristics that apply to Drafting only.
NC - when you load a part as the NC model.
Assembly - when you add a part document as an assembly component.
In all of these cases, whenever you make a change to the parent document (server), all child documents (clients) will need to be updated in order to receive the changes. There are two modes of updating - SemiAutomatic and Manual.
The Update Mode is set in Tools / Preferences / General / Update Mode.
In this mode, any changes to the parent document are automatically reflected in the child documents. You can see the updates
when you open the child document
if the child document window is open, when that window becomes active.
In this mode, changes to the parent document do not cause an automatic update to the child documents. When you open the child document or activate a window of the child document, the title bar will include the text Not Updated.
To update the child document, click the
icon, or select Edit / Update
from the main menu.
