Cutter Location

Define the cutter offset around islands (In, On or Out).

In Plunge Mill procedures, the Cutter Location options work differently.

On

The cutter tip will be on the contour.

In

The cutter will be tangent to the contour from the inner side.

Out

The cutter will be tangent to the contour from the outer side

Note: If multiple contours are selected with different Cutter Location values (i.e. one contour is defined as ON and the other contour is defined as OUT), the Cutter Location parameter (in the Boundary Settings table)will display "Multiple". If the Cutter Location values are the same for multiple contours, this value is displayed in the Cutter Location parameter.

Plunge Mill Options

Plunge Mill procedures have the following cutter location options:

In

Plunging is tangent to the defined contour (from the inside), regardless of the shape of the stock.

Automatic

Plunging is either In, On or Out of the defined contour and in accordance with the shape of the stock.

The Automatic option is calculated as follows:

  1. The tool will always enter from an open side of the Stock.

  1. If the defined contour is totally contained within the Stock’s boundary, the system regards this as an attempt to plunge a cavity. The following error message is displayed: “The contour must have at least one or part of a curve outside the stock”. The contour MUST be changed (you will not be able to execute the procedure until the contour is changed). The procedure will not Exit (unless the LMB & MMB are pressed) but will wait for you to fix the definition.

  1. If the defined contour is partially ON or OUT of the Stock boundary – the tool will plunge ON the contour within the tool restrictions (the tool’s cutting parameters and shape).

  1. If the defined contour is partially INSIDE the Stock boundary - the tool will always be tangent to the contour and never cross it (even with the Retracting motions).

If, due to a complicated 3D stock, the plunger doesn’t remove material outside the contour even though it is plunging on the contour, the plunge will be allowed (as long as no material outside the contour is damaged).
