Build phenomena
To build a phenomenon
- In Hypershade, build a shading network normally with mental ray for Maya base shaders or any custom shaders.
- Add a phenomenon node to the Work Space.
This is the root node for the phenomenon.
- Middle mouse drag from the node that has the look you want to capture in the phenomenon (for example, the final node that plugs into the Shading Network’s Shading Group) to the Phenomenon root, then select Other.
- The Connection Editor appears.
- Connect one of the following to the root:
- For materials, connect the outcolor.
- For geometry, connect the meshout .
- For volume, connect the outvalue.
- Add an attribute for the Phenomenon node by middle mouse dragging from the root to a node in the Shading Network, then selecting Other.
The Connection Editor appears.
Connect Interface to whatever attributes you want to make available on the Phenomenon for adjustments.
- Repeat for any other nodes whose attributes you want to make available for adjustments.
- Do the following:
- Specify version (optional).
- Apply flags for the type (optional).
- Apply global flags (optional).
- Select the entire Shading Network, including the Phenomenon root.
- Select File > Export Selection >
.
The Export Selection Options window appears.
- Select mental ray from the File Type drop-down list.
- Turn on Export Selected Items only.
- Select Shaders, Phenomena, Materials from the Predefined Export Filters.
- Save to your project’s mental ray directory.
