ray (light ray)

In rendering, the simulation of a straight line of light radiating from a light source.

The number of light rays that need to be calculated by the renderer depend on desired qualities, such as blurriness, resolution, refractions, specularity, and so on. In general, more rays are required for more blurry reflections or refractions.

See refraction, reflection map.
