Open a file
Use File > Openor File > Open Recent > to retrieve previously saved files, including wireframe models and foreign data formats.
Open a saved wire file
- Choose File > Open

- If the file was opened or saved during the current session, you can use File > Open Recent > and select the file from the list.
Open a file as reference
- Choose File > Open

- Check the As Reference box in the option window, then click Open File.
All geometry in the file is automatically placed in a reference layer.
What if...?
] When I open a wire file the screen is blank or the windows change?
AliasStudio saves descriptions of the open windows along with the other information in a wire file. When you open the file again, AliasStudio uses the window layout from the file, even if that means no windows.
- To open view windows, choose a layout from the Layout menu.
- To prevent a AliasStudio from loading the window layout from a file when you open, choose File > Open

] The file I want to open is in a different project?

Import data into the current file
Use File > Import > File to import data into your scene from a file.Import 3D scene data

Save a file
Use File > Save and Save as to save the information in the current file to disk or a network location.Save the file using its current name and location
- Choose File > Save

Save only saves in AliasStudio wire format. To save in other data formats, use Save as.
Save the file with a new name or location
- Choose File > Save as
.
- Use the Save dialog box to specify a name and location for the file, then click Save.
What if...?

- To save the document in a different folder, click a different drive in the Save in box, or double-click a different folder in the folder list.
- To save the document in a new folder, click Create New Folder in the dialog box task bar.
- In the File name box, type a name for the document.
- Click Save to save the document.

Save checkpoints
Checkpoints let you save your work at multiple stages in the same file. You can use the stored checkpoints to revert to earlier versions of a design.Save a checkpoint
- Choose File > Checkpoint
. A copy of your current work is saved to the file.
Load a saved checkpoint
- Choose File > Checkpoint

Delete a saved checkpoint

Export picked objects
Use File > Export > Active as to save the picked objects in a file.Save only the active objects

- Use the Save dialog box to specify a name and location for the file, then click Save.
Export sketch images
Use File > Export > Canvas Image/Mask Layer or File > Export > Make canvas pictureto save an image layer or sketch image plane as a TIFF or BMP file.
This functionality is only available on Windows.
Export an image layer
- Click the window that contains the image layer.
- Pick the image layer you want to export as an image.
Choose File > Export > Canvas image/mask layer

- Pick the sketch image plane you want to export as an image.

Use the AliasStudio file browser
On UNIX systems, use the AliasStudio file lister to open, save, and manipulate files. On Windows, you can choose between the standard file dialog boxes and the AliasStudio file browser.
The first time you open the file browser, only the path and filename text boxes are visible. To show the full browser, click Show List.

Organize files into projects
To keep your different work projects separate, you can organize them into AliasStudio projects. For each new project, AliasStudio creates a separate directory, where it stores all the files for that project.Start a new project
- Create or open the file you want to make the basis of the new project.
- Choose File > Save as
.
- In the Project pop-up menu, choose New Project.
- Use the Save dialog box to specify a name for the file, then click Save.
Switch to a different project
- Choose File > Open
and click the Show List button to open the file browser.
- In the Go pop-up menu, choose Projects.
- Click the name of the project directory to select it.
- In the Project pop-up menu, choose Set Current.
Add a frequently used location to the Go menu
- Choose File > Open
and click the Show List button to open the file browser.
- Locate the directory you want to add to the Go menu.
- In the Windows dialog box, click the arrow button next to the Go menu and choose an option from the Set Paths menu.
- In the AliasStudio file browser, open the Go pop-up menu and choose Set from the pop-up menu.

Recover data after a crash
If Studio stops unexpectedly, it attempts to save the current data to a special file named m_saved.wire. When you restart Studio you can open this file to retrieve any lost changes.If AliasStudio...

This file may provide useful information to Customer Support about the application failure, if it is repeatable.
Fix image plane problems
Image planes act as visual references while building a model or as a mean of compositing background or foreground images during rendering.Fix a missing image file
- Choose File > File References > File references
to locate the image plane. When AliasStudio cannot find an image plane, a small question mark appears at the left of the path name.
- Locate the missing image plane path name in the File Reference List window, then click the arrow (>) to the right of the pathname.
- Locate the correct directory and image plane file.
- Click the Replace path button.
- Click any view window that is not currently active to refresh the view and display the image.
