MPI is available for Windows and UNIX systems as an alternative parallel communication library. Vendor specific versions of MPI are available on some platforms (see following table).

For homogeneous distributed machines and multi-processor machines, MPI has been shown to give improved parallel efficiency over the PVM libraries. However, jobs run with MPI may not run as reliably as with PVM.
