The Beam Calculator dialog box allows you to perform deflection and stress calculations on structural steel cross sections.

To perform a beam calculation:

  1. Click Beam Calculator on the SolidWorks Toolbox toolbar, or click Toolbox, Beam Calculator.

The Beam Calculator dialog box appears.

  2. Select a Load Type using the slider to the right of the preview window. The available options include:

Fixed at one end, loaded at the other end

Fixed at one end, uniformly loaded

Supported at both ends, loaded in middle

Supported at both ends, uniformly loaded

Supported at both ends, unsymmetrical load

Supported at both ends, two symmetrical loads

  1. Under Type of Calculation, select Deflection or Stress.

The Input area updates to show the boxes appropriate for your selection.

  2. Click Beams, select a beam in the Structural Steel dialog box, then click Done to return to the Beam Calculator dialog box.

Some of the information in the Input area is automatically entered based on the beam that you select.

  3. Select an Axis to determine the value in the Moment of inertia or Section modulus box.

  4. Type a value in the rest of the boxes in the Input area except for the one to be solved, and click Solve. For example, make sure there is a value in all of the boxes except for the Deflection box if you are trying to solve for the deflection.

The Beam Calculator dialog box calculates the remaining value for you.

  5. Click Done to close the Beam Calculator dialog box.
