Appendix E - Troubleshooting
List of possible problems you may encounter or questions you may have about Bryce.
Please note that these are only proposed solutions and may not apply to your situation.
Problem:
Loading scene takes an extremely long time to open without any obvious reason or Bryce crashes when opening scene.
Possible Solution:
Problem:
Bryce crashes with an unexpected error when saving a scene.
Possible Solution #1:
Check the filename of any imported textures to see if any of the filenames are over 32 characters, including period and extension. Either rename the texture before importing or rename it in the Picture Editor.
Possible Solution #2:
A material preset may be causing the problem. If the crash started happening after you applied some materials, try removing the materials one at a time until you find the one that crashes Bryce.
Problem:
A bunch of Bryce trees are in a scene and parts of the trees are missing - OR - a metaball object with lots of metaballs has missing areas.
Possible Solution:
Bryce trees are made of metaball objects and because of this they inherited some of the problems the Bryce 5/5.5 metaballs have. When the meta objects are placed too close to each other, they may effectively "cancel" each other out. Try moving the trees or metaballs a little further apart from each other. Sometimes it only takes a tiny amount of movement to get the missing parts to show back up. Bryce 6 fixes this problem but trees and metaballs in scenes saved with earlier versions of Bryce cannot inherit the Bryce 6 fix. If using a Bryce 5 scene in Bryce 6, either move the trees/metaballs further apart or recreate the scene entirely in Bryce 6.
Problem:
How do I render a single image over a network?
Solution:
Use the Network Render and enable Use Tile Optimization.
Problem:
In Bryce 5.5, when I saved scene files, some of the textures would be lost. Why did this happen and has it been fixed in Bryce 6?
Solution:
"Yes, it's been sorted out. As you know, it's a memory issue. Well, the problem in 5.5 was that there was a memory maximum hard coded into B5.5 that once a scene's draw on memory got to a certain point, it started dropping textures to try to conserve on its memory usage. This was obviously a poor implementation to solve this problem of Bryce competing for memory needed by the OS, etc.
"In Bryce 6, we've improved this as much as we could by implementing a 'smart' memory management system where B6 allows your scenes to take up a certain percentage of memory before it will start to do this. ... Unfortunately, depending on the scene and the amount of RAM your system has, you may still encounter this on occasion, but from our testing, this is much less frequent now."

Problem:
After I've imported an object into Bryce via the DS link, then go back into DS to modify the object, when I go back into Bryce, the object goes back to its original location and size. Why is this happening?
Solution:
In order to incorporate the changes made in DS, Bryce deletes the old object so it can import the new object. You can usually use the Copy/Paste Matrix command to copy the old settings to the new object. See "Editing DS Objects" for more on this.
Problem:
I imported an object into Bryce via the DS link and when I tried to delete a part I didn't need, the entire object was deleted.
Solution:
In order to allow Bryce to incorporate any changes made to an object within DS, a link between the two programs is created in the scene file. This link keeps the entire object together so that it matches the DS version. In order to delete parts of the group, you'll need to Break the Link between DS and Bryce.
Problem:
When I load TIF images into the Pictures Editor, the image is either corrupted or the alpha channel isn't loaded.
Solution:
Not all paint programs save TIF files the same way. Try opening the image in your paint program and resaving the TIF file using a different compression method. Save the file under a new name just in case it doesn't work.
Question:
When I select a material preset in the Materials Library, the material in the preview window looks different than the preset thumbnail. Why?
Answer:
This is because the preset thumbnails were added with the neutral sky deselected so that the current scene sky settings would affect the material. Refer to "Thumbnail Preview Options - Materials Library" for examples showing the difference using a neutral sky or a sky preset can make to the preview.
