What About D?
When Component D is used along with any other combination of textures, it is used to add a new element to the material. It is not combined with the other components.
This allows you to use Components A, B, and C to drive the color of the material and use Component D to drive a different value, such as bump or transparency.
The example below shows a material with the Diffuse color driven by A and B, and an entirely different texture in D driving the bump.
