8-bit and 16-bit Terrains
New in Bryce 6 is the ability to import/export 16-bit grayscale images from the Terrain Editor. By default, Bryce creates terrains in 8-bit grayscale which can often be less smooth than needed but stores the images as 16-bit. Being able to import 16-bit grayscale images provides the ability to take advantage of Bryce's ability to store 16-bit and to add more detail to your terrains, with a much smoother surface.
Please note that you cannot convert 8-bit terrains to 16-bit in the Terrain Editor. Conversion between the two must be done in a paint program, like Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro. Just be aware that in some paint programs, like Paint Shop Pro, some of the tools (brushes, picture tubes) may not work in 16-bit mode, only in 8-bit mode. You may need to create your image in 8-bit then increase it to 16-bit before saving it.
In addition, not all formats work the same between programs. For example, a 16-bit TIFF image exported from Paint Shop Pro X cannot be imported into the Terrain Editor, but the same image exported as TIFF from Photoshop, can be imported into the Terrain Editor.
