STL (Stereo-lithography tessellation language) refers to the representation
of 3D forms as boundary representation solid models constructed entirely
of triangular facets. The STL format was developed for use in rapid prototyping
machines including Stereolithography apparatus (SLA).
A Stereolithography Apparatus (SLA) machine builds physical models by
focusing an ultraviolet light onto the surface of a container filled with
liquid photopolymer. The light beam draws each layer of an object onto
the surface of the liquid. At every place that the beam strikes the surface,
the liquid changes to solid. 3D parts are thus built from the bottom up,
one layer at a time. When the part is finished, it is exposed to ultraviolet
light for curing.
