With "follow surface" the tool tries to follow the geometry and even during passing the gap the toolpath will be generated similar to a closed geometry. As you see in the picture the green surfaces are the drive surfaces and the red surface is a check surface. The tool follows exactly the check surface and passes the gap. Note that the toolpath will only follow convex check surfaces and not concave ones.
