Description This command is used to search for a particular component or model in the current Available Libraries or in all libraries along a defined search path.

Use After launching the command, the Search Libraries dialog appears, with the Search tab active. If the dialog has been launched from the Libraries panel - using the Search button - its appearance will differ slightly, depending on whether you are searching for components or footprints (again, enabled from the panel).

Use this dialog to search for a particular component or model either from within the Available Libraries or in libraries found along a defined search path.

Set up the search criteria as required. When searching for a component, you can search using any combination of Name, Description, Model Type or Model Name. When searching for a PCB footprint model, you can search by Name only.

After the search has been defined, clicking on the Search button will begin the search and the Results tab of the dialog will be made active. Again, the information available in this tab of the dialog will depend on whether your search is for a component or a footprint model.

For components, search results are listed in terms of component name, associated library and any description. Clicking on an entry will show the component symbol and/or PCB footprint model (where available), in the lower region of the tab.

For footprint models, search results are listed in terms of footprint name and associated library. Clicking on an entry will show the footprint model in the lower region of the tab.

Use the Install Library button (where available) to add the associated library for the selected component or footprint model to the Installed Libraries list for Design Explorer. The Installed Libraries list in the Installed tab of the Available Libraries dialog will be updated to reflect the change.

If you have launched the search from the Libraries panel, the Select button will become available. Use this button to select the desired component or footprint model for use. The parent library will automatically be added to the Installed Libraries list (if it isn't already) and the component or footprint will appear as the selection in the Libraries panel.

Notes When in the Schematic or PCB Editors, the Available Libraries that can be used are listed on the Libraries panel. This list includes all Project libraries, Installed libraries and any libraries found along specified search paths for the project. Again, this list will differ, depending on whether you are searching for components or footprint models. To see the available libraries list that will be used, on the Libraries panel select either Components or Footprints and view the resulting list in the Available Libraries drop-down field (immediately below).

Project libraries are not initially added to the Installed Libraries list.

When defining search criteria, use the * wildcard to increase chances of an effective search, as different manufacturers use different prefix and suffixes. For example, use *RES* to search for a generic resistor.

If your search produces no results check that the Path is correctly specified. Also, try searching for a component that you know is in a library to check that everything is set correctly.

The installed libraries list is a Design Explorer environment setting. Any libraries added to the list will be available for all projects and is persistent across design sessions.
